For my first student artwork, I drew a detailed seaport scene from a small photo in National Geographic. With no previous training, I was determined to get all the perspectives just right of the seagull (close-up), the dock (foreground) & the mountains (in the distance). It also contrasts the busy-ness of the harbor labor & the gulls' feeding frenzy with the fishermen's cold adversity from a weary life. The free-gliding gull above brings hope of a brighter tomorrow.
Attempting to impress my high school Art teacher on my first assignment, I drew a very detailed seaport scene from a little picture. When I turned it in, he said, "You need to add a little more." Since I didn't know he was being facetious, I was devastated, took it home & added in a boy with a yoyo! I did receive an A+, but had to learn he was teasing. For my portfolio I named it, "Venezuelan Seaport" to sound exotic, since I never knew the location. Many years later at a Georgia Fine Art show, a guest recognized the error, and in her English accent she said, "That's not in South America" 'cause I've been there & that building is red!" She researched the ship's I.D., learned it was from Lerwick Harbor, Scotland, then bought a print & I was elated! However, after she explained the rough weather & the fishermen's life of adversity there, I renamed the art, "Never Far Away", since the seagull hovering over the port reminded me of the Spirit's promised presence & hope, found in (Psalm 139:7-10): "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I go to the heavens, You are there; If I make my bed in the depths (of the sea), You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there Your hand will guide me, Your right hand will hold me fast."
